Moving for college is a double shock: a new city and a new world. You left your school friends, your hometown shortcuts, the streets you could find in your sleep. In Vizag, you're starting from zero - and outstation students face a documented adjustment curve that local students simply don't.

Here's the honest version of what that curve looks like: the first semester is the hardest, and it gets better in a way that's completely normal. It's not a sign that you picked the wrong city. It's just the timeline of starting over.

Why making friends here is slower than back home

Back home, you had built-in shortcuts: childhood neighbours, school batches, relatives nearby. In Vizag, you have none of that - and most of the people around you are busy with the same problem. Everyone is a little lonely in the first months; it's just that nobody says it first.

On top of that, the stage is tilted against you in specific ways:

• Hostel curfews cut your evenings short, and the outings you do get are precious.
• Local friend groups are already formed - your batchmates had a year of shared canteen life before you walked in.
• Sundays are your real window, and most students waste them on hostel ceilings because nothing is planned.

What actually works for outstation students

Three things, in order of importance:

1. Find other outstation students - but don't stop there. People who moved from somewhere else understand your situation instantly. It's the fastest friends-on-day-one you'll get. But if you only befriend outstation students, the city never opens up. Build both circles.
2. Show up to low-pressure, repeated events. You don't need to become best friends with anyone at the first meetup. You need to see the same faces three times - that's when strangers become people and people become plans.
3. Use Sundays like they matter. Sunday daytime is when the city's most restricted students are actually free. And Clstr schedules its biggest events exactly in that window, on purpose, so that students like you don't have to choose between a social life and a curfew.

What to expect at a Clstr event as a newcomer

Every Clstr event starts with the same structure: a short opener where everyone says their name, their college, one thing they're into, and one thing they're looking for. That's it. Fifteen minutes. Then it opens up.

A few things outstation students tell us after their first event:

• "Nobody thought it was weird that I came alone." Almost everyone in the room came alone. That's the norm.
• "I said 'I'm new to Vizag' and three people immediately started recommending places to eat." It turns out the fastest way to get adopted by a city is to say you're new to it.
• "I found two people from my own region I didn't even meet at my college." Cross-college is wild like that.

The "New to Vizag" Circle

• Month 1: Still lost, mostly. That's fine. Your goal is one low-pressure event, one person you can say hi to on campus.
• Months 2-3: The same faces become familiar. You start getting "let's go get dosa" messages instead of "which hostel are you in?" messages.
• Month 4 onward: You have plans that don't require planning. You know which buses work. You have a circle. The city stops being a place you live in and starts being a place you belong to.

Nobody skips the first month. But almost everyone who keeps showing up gets past it.
